Morning mist becomes more frequent, darkness falls early and cultural life moves indoors to the theatres: the Donizetti Opera Festival ends on 29 November, the composer’s birthday. Città Alta is surrounded by hills on three sides, and almost every bastion, staircase or terrace offers a view of the woods as their colours change.

Autumn in Bergamo Alta is all about this interplay between stone and vegetation: dry-stone walls, private gardens spilling out from courtyards, terraced vegetable plots and rows of trees along historic streets.

The Venetian Walls and the gardens of Città Alta

The Venetian Walls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017, are the first place to take in the view. The tree-lined avenue that runs along them follows the city’s perimeter, alternating views over the plain and the hills. On clear days, the colours of the trees stand out in the foreground, with the Prealps in the distance.

Within the Walls, the gardens of Palazzo Moroni, the largest private garden in Città Alta and now managed by FAI, show how vegetation blends with the architecture of the historic centre.

The “Lorenzo Rota” Botanical Garden and the Scaletta di Colle Aperto

The “Lorenzo Rota” Botanical Garden occupies the Baluardo di Castagneta, an ancient defensive outpost along the Walls. They were once used by people travelling up and down each day with produce from the land. Walking along them, for example between Borgo Canale and San Vigilio, takes you past low walls, vegetable gardens and gardens with climbing plants and fruit trees.

In autumn, leaves gather on the steps and gardens become splashes of red and yellow among the houses. It is a way to see autumnal Bergamo from a more intimate perspective, away from the main squares.

Where to see autumn foliage around Bergamo

Beyond the Walls lies the Parco dei Colli di Bergamo, a protected area covering around 47 square kilometres, much of it woodland, which includes part of the city and several neighbouring municipalities.

Here, autumn foliage is not just a backdrop to admire from a distance, but a landscape to walk through, with chestnut woods, meadows, vineyards and cultivated fields.

Astino in autumn: the Valley of Biodiversity

Astino in autumn is perhaps the place that best captures the connection between the city and the countryside. The valley, covering around 58 hectares between Bosco dell’Allegrezza and Colle della Benaglia, is dominated by the former monastery complex founded by Vallombrosian monks in the 12th century.

Around it, fields restored to traditional cultivation and the Botanical Garden’s section in Astino, the Valley of Biodiversity, feature rows of trees, orchards and vegetable gardens that take on shades of brown and gold at this time of year.

The landscape of Astino received the Council of Europe Landscape Award in 2021. Behind it stretches a dense chestnut wood, which probably contributed to the sanctuary’s name.

The surrounding woodland, where chestnut trees are still abundant, is one of the places where autumn is most keenly felt: open chestnut burrs along the edges of the trail, leaves covering the ground and views across cultivated fields towards the Brembana Valley.

Among the chestnut trees, on damp mornings in late October, the only sound is that of leaves crunching beneath your shoes.

Giongo Valley, between Monte Bastia and Monte Giacoma

In the north-western section of the park, in the municipality of Villa d’Almè and specifically in the Bruntino area, Giongo Valley is considered one of the most valuable natural areas in the hills.

The valley takes its name from the Giongo stream (around 4 km long), which rises on the slopes of Canto Alto and flows through the municipalities of Villa d’Almè, Sorisole and Sedrina before joining the Brembo River.

The broadleaf woods covering the slopes of Monte Bastia and Monte Giacoma, interspersed with meadows and small rural settlements, offer a less well-known foliage experience than places closer to the city centre.

Anyone wishing to explore further afield in the Bergamo area in autumn will find similar landscapes on a larger scale in the Brembana and Seriana valleys.
