Palazzo del Podestà is another historical building, which is located in the heart of the Upper Town. Built in the 12th century, it represents one of the most significant examples of medieval civil architecture in the city. It was used as the seat of political and administrative power, housing the offices of the podestà and an official in charge of administering the city.
The building presents a Romanesque architectural style, with some modifications over the centuries. Currently, Palazzo del Podestà is open to the public and, immediately at its entrance, on the ground floor, you can catch a glimpse of the Roman Bergamo through the archaeological excavations. Going up to the first floor, you can see the wonderful frescoes from the Renaissance period, while some parts of the building are used for exhibitions.
