One of the oldest squares in the Upper Town of Bergamo is undoubtedly Piazza Mercato del Fieno (Hay Market Square), so called because of the products that were sold there, specifically hay. In the past, this place was also a vital hub of the city’s activity as a market place, as well as a centre of trade and commerce. Indeed, all around it, merchants used to sell and exchange hay. A particular feature of this square are the medieval tower houses, which are characteristically tall and narrow and still in good condition. Near the square there is the impressive Gombito Tower, and it intersects the ancient Cardo descending towards the market and the current Via San Lorenzo.
