Cycling between city and nature: cycle paths in Bergamo and its province

24 June 2025

Bergamo is increasingly becoming a bike-friendly city. In recent years, the network of cycle paths has expanded with new routes and itineraries that combine safety, beautiful landscapes and accessibility.

Whether you want to cycle in the city, venture into the valleys or set off on a journey through rivers and lakes, Bergamo has so much to offer if you travel by bike.

An area to be experienced by bike

Cycling is one of the best ways to discover the richness and variety of the Bergamo area, which is becoming a top destination for those seeking an active, sustainable and authentic travelling experience.

The city and its province offer an ever-expanding network of cycle paths, allowing cyclists of all levels to explore the area in a sustainable, safe and fascinating way.

There is one project of particular interest: the Bicipolitana, a network under development that aims to connect the different areas of the province in a capillary manner with continuous, well-signposted cycle paths that are integrated with public transport. An infrastructure designed not only for tourism, but also for a more sustainable daily mobility.

What cycle paths are there in Bergamo?

Bergamo and its province offer several cycle paths, both urban and out-of-town. Let’s discover them here.

The Morla Greenway

This urban cycle path located in the heart of Bergamo, the Morla Greenway, is the perfect solution for those who want to go for a bike ride while staying in the city. It is a cycle and pedestrian path that runs along the Morla stream, passing through residential neighbourhoods, parks and agricultural areas. With its easy route it is ideal for a relaxed bike ride, also for families with children, and it connects several attractions and important locations in the city.

The cycle path in Via San Bernardino

Among residents, many are wondering: where is the new cycle path in Bergamo? One of the most interesting new developments in the city is in fact the new cycle path in Via San Bernardino, located in the Longuelo district, in the west part of the city. This section is included in a larger project to connect Bergamo with the municipalities in the south-western area, and it is part of a vision of soft mobility that aims to make everyday cycling both safer and more enjoyable. The cycle path runs through residential and green areas, and it is suitable both for commuters and for those who simply want to enjoy a ride.

The Upper Town and its surroundings

Even if the historic centre of Bergamo Alta, with its ups and downs and cobbled alleys, is more suitable for pedestrians, or for experienced cyclists and e-bikes, there are loop routes and cycle-pedestrian sections that connect the Lower Town to green areas such as the Parco dei Colli. Here, paths wind through woods, vineyards and ancient farmhouses, offering breathtaking views of the walled city and of the surrounding valleys.

Astino Valley Tour

An evocative itinerary that runs through one of the greenest and quietest valleys near the city is the one that starts in the Longuelo area and then climbs gently through vegetable gardens, forests and the famous Astino abbey, now a cultural and agricultural centre. The tour is short – 17 km – but very scenic, and it is ideal for a relaxing ride surrounded by the rural landscape.

The Brembana Valley Cycle Path: from the city to the mountains

One of the most famous cycle paths in the province of Bergamo is the Brembana Valley Cycle Path, also known as the Bergamo – Zogno cycle path, which follows the route of the old railway line from the municipality of Zogno to Piazza Brembana, for a total of about 21 km that can be covered in an hour and a half.

Completely paved and clearly signposted, it passes through illuminated tunnels, bridges and picturesque mountain villages, offering a ride surrounded by the alpine nature, running through beautiful villages such as San Pellegrino Terme and Cornello dei Tasso, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

From the Monterosso district in Bergamo, the Seriana Valley Cycle Path starts, a cycle route that goes up the valley to the town of Clusone, passing through Albino and Gazzaniga and climbing up to Valbondione.

About 60 km long (to be covered in 3-4 hours depending on your pace), this route is distinguished by its balance of green areas, river views and historic centres rich in sacred art and industrial tradition. Perfect for those seeking a combination of relaxation and discovery, it is one of Bergamo’s most popular and easily accessible cycle paths.

For well-trained cyclists, the lake area offers dreamy itineraries. One of the most popular is the ring that connects Lake Endine and Lake Iseo, passing through the hills of Val Cavallina.

The routes alternate between protected cycling routes and roads with low traffic, ideal for admiring the lakeside nature, small villages and perhaps for indulging in a food and wine stop.

Other cycle paths in Bergamo and its province

The Ciclovia dell’Isola Bergamasca crosses the municipalities of the island located between the Brembo and Adda rivers, connecting Terno d’Isola, Sotto il Monte, Calusco and Villa d’Adda. This 15 km route follows the profile of the river and touches historical places, sanctuaries and agricultural landscapes. It is a peaceful itinerary, perfect for those who love cycling between nature and spirituality.

Offering a 36 km cultural journey through villages, castles and medieval fortifications, the Cycle Path of the Bergamo Castles (Ciclovia dei Castelli Bergamaschi) winds its way from Cavernago to Malpaga Castle, passing through Grumello del Monte and reaching Romano di Lombardia. This route crosses the eastern plain along minor roads and easy unpaved sections.

The Serio Natural Park cycle path follows the Serio river from Seriate to the Bassa bergamasca, crossing a protected area rich in wildlife, floodplain forests and river, and wetland landscapes, including the Laghet di Rane. The route, known as the Quadrifoglio Cycling Route, consists of trails varying in length from 26 to 51 km. It is flat, with several rest stops and equipped areas, ideal for a family day outdoors.
